Traveling with Tulane Health Care

Tulane provides health care coverage to benefits-eligible participants and their dependents while traveling outside the network area, whether in the United States or in a foreign country. Please see your insurance provider's section below for more information.

Emergency Health Services: Blue Cross Blue Shield

Coverage under Blue Cross Blue Shield is limited to emergency care only.

  • The coverage is applicable if the individual is enrolled in and continue to be enrolled in the domestic plan coverage. Also, domestic benefits will continue for employees so long as their premiums are up to date.
  • Health services provided in a foreign country are not eligible unless required as Emergency Health Services.
  • The process for reimbursement of Emergency Health Services can be cumbersome for either plan. Upfront payment, negotiated discounts, foreign currency requirements, etc. complicate the situation. Members may have to file their own claim.
  • Whenever there is any doubt, or a serious situation that requires more sophisticated management, members can always call the customer service number on their ID card for guidance. BCBS is trained to assist with these types of situations. There is no guarantee that a particularly provider or facility will accept BCBS, even with BCBS’s help, but it’s still a recommended step to initiate the process.

Business Travel: Aetna World Traveler Plan

The Expatriate Plan is for those employees living and working internationally for an extended period of time (six months or longer). Aetna’s World Traveler Plan is for those traveling outside of their home country for a maximum of 180 days (even if they are coming back to the US).

  • Employees must register prior to leaving the country, but ONLY if they are under the Expatriate Plan. An overview of the program is found hereNote: When registering, please enter zeroes in front of the CSA number.
