Performance-Based Merit Increases

Annual Merit and Performance Review Cycle

Tulane is committed to linking annual pay increases to staff performance. The opportunity for a merit increase is based on an individual’s annual performance review and the approved guidelines. The purpose of the annual performance review is to ensure staff receive clear feedback regarding previous and future performance expectations and goals.

  • Active regular full-time and part-time employees hired on or before December 31st of the preceding calendar year. *
  • Employees on approved FMLA (paid and non-paid).
  • A completed performance appraisal must be on file.

An online performance review is not conducted for employees hired after October 1st of the performance cycle.
Temporary employees are ineligible to receive merit increases.

  • Annual merit increases are typically effective in July.
  • Annual performance appraisals are typically conducted between January 1st and March 1st of each year.  Visit the Staff Performance Management page for more information.

  • Complete performance evaluation and assign a performance rating for employee results, Tulane’s values, and growth sections (managerial values, if management position.) Enter ratings into the Business Performance Management (BPM) system.
  • Review the merit budget sheets for your area(s) of responsibility. Considerations for allocating merit increase recommendations should include:
    • Merit increase guidelines
    • Performance
    • Contributions
    • Achievements
    • Internal pay relationships
  • Enter your merit increase recommendations into the Budget Development System (BDS) before the deadline.
  • Once the Board has approved  merit recommendations, written notification can be sent to the employee prior to the effective date, which is typically, July 1st.
