ALAAMEA Alliance Faculty and Staff Gathering: Learning about Black and Indigenous Roots of Carnival Culture in New Orleans

ALAAMEA invites you to join them via Zoom in a special celebratory gathering where you will learn about the black and indigenous roots of Mardi Gras culture in New Orleans. Dr. Judith Maxwell opens the gathering with a land blessing and honoring, Dr. Rosanne Adderly gives brief remarks on these roots.

We have special musical guests and a speaker share the experience of masking in Mardi Gras Indian culture. We end with some time in break-out groups to share our long-established or new Mardi Gras traditions and how we are shifting these in pandemic times.

Moving from "Woke" to Working for Black Survival and Wellness at Tulane with Dr. Della Mosley from Academics for Black Lives

In this interactive discussion, Della V. Mosley, PhD - founder of Academics for Black Survival and Wellness will discuss the urgent need for critical consciousness development specific to anti-Black racism.

Attendees will have opportunities to critically think about their relationship to anti-Black racism and to Black survival and wellness. Dr. Della will provide a useful framework and practical tools that can help participants move from the awareness to action stages of critical consciousness development.

Faculty and Staff Taking Action on Anti-Black Racism: Viewing of “The Veil”

Join us for a viewing of Raven Ancar’s “The Veil” - a documentary about the experiences of Black students on Tulane’s campus. Raven is a junior at Tulane and shares why this documentary is required viewing for all in our community.

After the documentary showing and dialogue with Raven, faculty and staff join break-out groups to identify ways they can immediately take action on anti-Black racism in their teaching and learning environments.
