Tulane’s Office of Human Resources' Talent Development team and the Innovative Learning Center are partnering again this year to host Professional Development Week (PDW) from September 21-25, 2026! PDW will offer a mix of virtual and in-person sessions on both the Uptown and Downtown campuses to support the growth and success of faculty and staff.
Across five days, sessions will explore five core themes:
- AI in everyday work — using AI tools responsibly in daily tasks, teaching, and research
- Respectful conversations — civil dialogue, navigating disagreement, and supporting a positive campus climate
- Navigating change — leading and working through ongoing changes at Tulane
- Wellbeing at work — avoiding burnout, setting boundaries, and supporting mental health and sustainable workloads
- Leading people — practical coaching, communication, and priority-management skills for managers and informal leaders

Designing Your System of Self-Care

What to Expect: In this session, you'll map where your energy is currently going across various dimensions of self-care, from boundaries and workload to joy and connection, and pinpoint areas that might be ripe for change. You will brainstorm possible solutions and then commit to concrete shifts you can start today - with no extra time, budget, or permission required. Drawing on life design, design thinking, Liberating Structures, and coaching methodologies, you'll leave with a practical self-care worksheet, a felt sense of where your own patterns lie, and specific facilitation tools you can continue to use in your personal and professional life.
TulaneAI Fundamentals: A Hands-On Introduction

What to Expect: TulaneAI is Tulane University's AI platform for faculty and staff. This hands-on workshop helps you get comfortable navigating the platform and choosing the right options for your work. You'll learn how to start and manage conversations, choose between AI models and understand why some suit certain tasks better, and see why TulaneAI is the preferred environment for university work, including responsible use of university information. You'll also get hands-on experience with useful features like Personal Agents, Projects, Skills, and working with files. Whether you're new to AI or already use it regularly, this session gives you the foundation to use TulaneAI confidently. Bring a laptop and be ready to explore.
Building the Tulane Vision - Diving Deep into Core Values

Getting to Know the Employee Assistance Program

What to Expect: Did you know you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offered by your employer, which gives you and your household members free, confidential access to a full range of work/life services? Join us for this session to learn more about all the services Lucet EAP has to offer! Lucet is available to assist you and your household members with a variety of needs you might have including individual, family, and couples’ counseling; family and care giving referrals (pet, child, and elder care); legal and financial consultations; health/wellness referrals; convenience services such as event/party planning, travel, household maintenance, relocation, housing, and so much more.
Let’s Talk It Through: Applying Restorative Practices in Difficult Conversations

From Spark to Success: Leading Transformative Change

What to Expect: When you think of a transformative leader, someone who has made a real impact in, say, education, society, culture, politics, government, business, religion, sport, or other arenas, what were some of the key drivers of their success? How did they go from idea to action, from action to engagement, from engagement to understanding, from shared understanding to a shared movement, to achieving the critical mass of support to achieve success? In this seminar, we will discuss how we can use effective tools and techniques to achieve successful change in our personal and professional endeavors.

Zoom AI Companion: The Features You Didn’t Know You Had

What to Expect: Zoom has grown far beyond video meetings, and many of its newest AI capabilities are already built into tools you use every day. In this hands-on session, we'll explore Zoom AI Companion and the features that help you prepare for meetings, stay engaged, capture what matters, and turn conversations into follow-up actions. Inside the meeting, you'll see how AI Companion can catch you up on what you missed, surface decisions and action items, and generate summaries and Smart Recordings organized into highlights, chapters, and next steps. Beyond the meeting room, we'll cover how it works with Team Chat, captures in-person and non-Zoom conversations, turns notes into emails and tasks, and powers AI Workflows, Webinar features, and search across past meetings, transcripts, and chats. Whether you use Zoom daily or occasionally, you'll leave knowing practical ways to put these tools to work.

Leading Your Leaders: How to Build Alignment and Gain Approval

What to Expect: Gaining approval for an important project or initiative involves much more than making a strong case. It requires understanding your request, anticipating stakeholder priorities, and presenting information in a way that makes it easy for leaders to engage and make decisions. This practical session will explore how to manage up and build alignment by tailoring your approach to your audience, identifying key decision-makers, mapping approvals, and establishing a clear project plan. Participants will also learn how consistent communication, thoughtful preparation, and an understanding of individual leadership preferences can build the trust needed to influence decisions over time.
Just Because We Can AI, Should We AI? Judgment and Disclosure in Everyday Work

What to Expect: Most AI sessions teach a tool or hand you a list of rules. This one is about judgment: deciding when AI belongs in your work and when it does not, and how to disclose your use of it. We will work through everyday situations where AI can help and where its use can go wrong, then build a practical set of questions for deciding when and how to use AI. The goal is not to use AI more or less. It is to use it on purpose.

In this session, Rachael Kelly (University Communications & Marketing), Eunice Ofori (Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching), Sydney Cone (Office for Campus Accessibility), Bobbie Garner-Coffie & Izabela Zbyrowska (IT/Innovative Learning Center) will explain Tulane's obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act to create accessible digital content, as well as demonstrating current accessibility products and software, best practices, and tips for every employee's use in creating accessible digital content.

Ask, Don't Tell: How Coaching Changes the Way You Lead

What to Expect: When someone on your team brings you a problem, you probably solve it. It feels fast and helpful, but it trains your team to wait for you, and problems keep landing back on your desk. Coaching can offer a different way to respond. In this session, you will learn what coaching is, how to recognize a coachable moment, and five questions you can start asking your team this week. You will watch a live coaching demonstration and practice with a partner using a real situation from your own work. Designed for managers and midlevel leaders across Tulane.

What to Expect: Many teams lose time answering the same questions, searching for the right file, recreating instructions, or relying on the one person who knows "all the things." This session introduces four simple, no-cost habits that help staff turn everyday work into reusable answers, clearer resources, better handoffs, and captured lessons learned—all using tools and routines teams already have. You'll learn to spot the common signs of avoidable rework, apply these four habits to your own workflow, and choose one practical next step, like drafting a quick guide, clarifying where a resource lives, or documenting lessons learned from a recent project or busy season. It's a good fit for anyone—staff, managers, team leads, trainers, or process owners—who wants to reduce repeated questions, improve shared resources, and make recurring work easier to manage.
The AP Files: Uncovering the Secrets of the WaveWorks Invoice Lifecycle

What to Expect: This session gives WaveWorks users a practical overview of the Accounts Payable process and the full invoice lifecycle. Participants will better understand what happens behind the scenes after a purchase order is created, how invoices move through the system, and how to respond to common vendor questions. The course walks through the invoice lifecycle—from requisition and vendor submission to receipt matching and final payment—and covers how invoices are entered into WaveWorks, matched to purchase orders, and paid, including payment terms like Net 30 and standard methods such as ACH and check. You'll also learn how to identify an invoice's status, recognize common causes of payment delays like matching errors and missing receipts, and determine when to follow up or escalate. The session rounds out with the supplier onboarding process, available Accounts Payable reports, and who to contact for concerns like credit holds, payment status, invoice discrepancies, and account setup.

What to Expect: Curious about the tuition waiver benefit at Tulane? Join us for a session covering how the process works from start to finish. HR Benefits will walk through how employee eligibility is confirmed, including which programs qualify for the waiver. Financial Aid will explain which types of financial aid may be available in addition to the tuition waiver and how eligible aid can be combined with the benefit. Beyond the Basic Survey - Tips, Tricks, and Creative Uses for Qualtrics

What to Expect: We all know Qualtrics works well for basic surveys, with lots of question types and ways to personalize your survey flow. But did you know you can do much more? You can link surveys together to keep answers anonymous while still recording participation, set up automatic reminders and thank-you notes, and include attention checks that let engaged participants continue while exiting those who aren't paying attention. You can also run randomized survey experiments, use scoring options for graded assessments or quizzes, and prescreen for participant characteristics before investing in full data collection. This session explores some of these more creative uses of Qualtrics, along with ways to enhance its basic survey features.

From Spark to Success: Leading Transformative Change

What to Expect: When you think of a transformative leader, someone who has made a real impact in, say, education, society, culture, politics, government, business, religion, sport, or other arenas, what were some of the key drivers of their success? How did they go from idea to action, from action to engagement, from engagement to understanding, from shared understanding to a shared movement, to achieving the critical mass of support to achieve success? In this seminar, we will discuss how we can use effective tools and techniques to achieve successful change in our personal and professional endeavors.

AI: What It Could, Can, and Will Soon Do for You

What to Expect: AI is evolving quickly. Most people didn't know what AI could do for them last year, let alone today, and who has time to think about what comes next? In this session, we will first make sure everyone is on the same page about what today's tools already do that last year's did not: remember who you are, work from your own files, search the web, and reason through a problem. Then we'll go through live demonstrations of the more advanced side: AI that knows your calendar and files, runs jobs on a schedule, and finishes multistep tasks on its own. This will include things outside of work that still feel like work, like planning a trip, untangling the family calendar, or clearing out the downloads folder, with the goal of getting some evenings and weekends back. Finally, we will discuss where all of this is heading and what that might mean. You will leave with a current picture of what AI can do, a few ways to get time back, and a way to think about what comes next.
