COVID-19 Benefits Information for Employees

BCBS is implementing the following changes to procedures to help in the efficient handling of medical needs as we progress through the coronavirus pandemic.

Waive Prior Authorizations. The health plan will waive prior authorizations for diagnostic tests and for covered services that are medically necessary and consistent with CDC guidance for members if diagnosed with COVID-19. The health plan will make dedicated clinical staff available to address inquiries related to medical services, ensuring timeliness of responses related to COVID-19.

100% Coverage on Testing. The health plan will cover medically necessary diagnostic tests that are consistent with CDC guidance related to COVID-19 at no cost share to the member where such testing is not covered as part of the Public Health Service response.  We will ensure patient testing and any subsequently needed care are done in close coordination with federal, state and public health authorities.

Increase Access to Medications.  The health plan will increase access to prescription medications by encouraging members to use their 90-day mail order benefit. The health plan will also ensure formulary flexibility if there are shortages or access issues. Patients will not be liable for additional charges that stem from obtaining a non-preferred medication if the preferred medication is not available due to shortage or access issues.

The Standard Life Insurance Company
Our partner for our Life Insurance and Long Term Disability Insurance, has issued the following information.
Disability

  • Each disability claim will continue to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and decisions made based on the facts of that claim as well as the terms of your group policy.
  • If an individual is s quarantined as directed by a licensed health professional or government agency, but HAS NOT been diagnosed with COVID-19, but is unable to perform their job remotely, they WILL retain coverage and eligibility under the policy should they eventually become disabled.
  • If an employer has approved work-from-home arrangements due to COVID-19 public health concerns we will consider the covered employees actively at work under the group policy, so this will not affect their coverage eligibility.

Travel Assistance Benefit
This benefit is available to all employees covered under the life insurance plan, as well as their eligible dependents (spouse and children through age 25).  We partner with General Global Assistance (GGA) to provide this service, which includes pre-trip planning services as well as emergency transportation and medical assistance services if a person is traveling at least 100 miles from home or internationally for 180 days or less.

  • If you have an employee or eligible dependent that is traveling and has tested positive for COVID-19, their request would be treated like a standard medical case. If the individual is eligible for transport benefits, those benefits would be arranged in accordance with the departing and receiving country’s government clearance on flying.
  • Links to the Travel Assistance Flyer and Employee Card are below for your convenience.  We would encourage everyone to either keep the card with them, or put this information in their cell phone prior to any travel.
