The Institutional Equity team provides educational programs available to staff and faculty, as part of Tulane’s commitment to fostering and maintaining a diverse working and learning environment. Courses offered are designed to raise awareness, challenge our thinking and promote a respectful and inclusive environment.
Below are descriptions of each course with more information about how to schedule or complete courses. We encourage all staff to do their part to promote diversity and inclusion by bringing these courses to your department.
Live Virtual Trainings
Civil Treatment training program: This is a dynamic and interactive learning experience that promotes a clear understanding of Tulane’s workplace standards and expectations. With simple and sustainable learning models and tools, leaders and employees will develop skills proven to positively impact the workplace culture and business results in ways that align with Tulane’s mission and values.
We are excited to announce that the Civil Treatment Education Program, including training for leaders and employees, has gone to a virtual format. Both classes are now just 90 minutes. These dynamic and interactive classes are now available, and we encourage employees to sign up today.
Civil Treatment for Employees® simulates realistic workplace scenarios, offering insights and practical skills relevant to Tulane’s success. By focusing on day-to-day behaviors, Civil Treatment for Employees challenges and motivates participants to consider the impact of their behavior and encourages them to speak up when issues arise.
Topics include: Speaking up about workplace issues, inappropriate and abusive behavior, social media and electronic communications, the manager’s duty to act, and inappropriate mutual banter.
Civil Treatment for Employees is a 2.5 hour class.
Using real-life business scenarios, Civil Treatment for Leaders simulates some of the leaders' most important conversations with their people. Topics include coaching and managing performance, addressing inappropriate behavior (harassment, discrimination, bullying, retaliation, unprofessional), making employment decisions, the duty to act, welcoming concerns, and modeling the behaviors that ensure an inclusive, productive work environment. (90 minutes)
Civil Treatment for Leaders sessions are scheduled for December 9, December 16, January 28, February 9, March 10, April 20, May 19, and June 22.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Library
These 8 self-driven 20 - 30 minute online trainings offer a deeper understanding into building an equitable work environment.
This 20-minute training provides employees with overviews of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), an explanation of their rights as employees, and an understanding of how the ADA and PDA apply in their workplace. The ADA is a federal law that prohibits discrimination based on disabilities and provides protections including requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations in certain situations. The PDA, an amendment to Title VII, is a law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions.

Bystander intervention training is one of the most effective ways to empower employees to address and prevent harassment and discrimination in the workplace. This course raises awareness of the importance of being an active bystander and provides employees with practical steps for protecting targets of abusive behavior and preventing future misconduct.
This 20-minute training explains the role a positive work environment plays in motivating employees and prepares managers to use positivity as a tool for enabling individuals to thrive and organizations to succeed. This course will provide managers with concrete steps for promoting a positive work environment and encourage them to incorporate these initiatives into their workplace.
Microaggressions are subtle or unintentional comments or actions that can have a negative impact on others and the workplace. This 15-minute training, designed for all employees, explains microaggressions and the effect they can have on others, examines why certain remarks are considered microaggressions, and provides guidance for responding to microaggressions in a positive and effective manner.
This 25-minute course helps people making personnel and management decisions understand some of the underlying causes of unconscious bias. It discusses how these biases work against building a diverse and inclusive workforce and presents techniques for helping to overcome unconscious bias in decision making.
The 35-minute course explains racial identity and racism alongside core Diversity & Inclusion concepts and provides practical steps to help individuals choose inclusive actions, improve cultural competency, and address unconscious bias. The course further emphasizes the role civility and workplace sensitivity play in promoting a respectful culture.
Harassment and Discrimination Prevention
Tulane is committed to maintaining a workplace free of sexual harassment and discrimination. One of the ways we do this is through providing annual mandatory online training courses. These courses are designed to educate all of us on how to better recognize, respond, report and ultimately prevent discrimination and sexual harassment at Tulane.
There are two courses. One is designed for non-supervisory employees and the other for employees who supervise others. Both courses are also available in Spanish.
This 40-minute course for employees explains the expected behaviors for building a workplace free of discrimination and harassment. The course is divided into brief, schedule-friendly episodes that cover current topics including sexual harassment, discrimination, bystander intervention, diversity, and inclusion.

This 55-minute course for managers explains the expected behaviors for building a workplace free of discrimination and harassment. The course covers current topics including sexual harassment, discrimination, bystander intervention, diversity, and inclusion, and describes the responsibilities of managers to prevent inappropriate conduct, and to respond appropriately should it occur.

Spark A Conversation
34 short (2-5 minutes) videos that cover a variety of topics and issues including effective communication, diversity, equity, and inclusion, consensual relationships, being an ally and more. They are tools for self -reflection and/or to have thought provoking conversations with others.
