Professional Development Day - Tulane Today
On September 26, the Office of Human Resources in partnership with vendors and departments across campus held the first ever Professional Development Day. Over 500 faculty and staff attended the event which included twenty-five workshops, Resource Fair, Innovation Jam, technical training and a keynote speaker lunch.
The groundwork for a daylong event was laid last June as a result of the Learning Needs Assessment. Human Resources Learning and Organizational Development team began brainstorming ways to promote professional development opportunities and awareness of tools available to support employee growth. Leveraging best practices and peer research, the team started developing a program that would be uniquely Tulane. The five key learning tracks included Effective Communication, Performance Management, Supervisory Skills, Leadership and Technical. Speakers from within Tulane and guest speakers shared their expertise on areas including The Business of Tulane, Generational Differences, Change Management, Coaching for Performance, Feedback is a Gift, Emotional Intelligence and Budget 101. All supporting the theme to Connect, Learn, Grow and Lead.
Vice President of Human Resources Dr. Shantay Bolton led the charge with a video from President Fitts discussing his career path, inspiration and the challenges he faced along his journey. Dr. Bolton spoke about the importance of taking charge of your own career. Both speakers verbalized the importance of developing a growth mindset.
Many departments hosted a table in the Resource Fair which highlighted campus programs and services available to employees. The event also included an Innovation Jam, a design sprint focused on Tulane’s Institutional Objectives. During the sprint, participants worked in multi-disciplinary teams using design thinking methods to develop workable solutions. The session was facilitated by Dr. Lesley-Ann Noel in partnership with the Phyllis M. Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking.
Chief Operating Officer and Treasurer Patrick Norton delivered the keynote address. He spoke about the University’s key institutional objectives, future plans and eagerness to become a world-class institution. Mr. Norton thanked the staff and faculty and noted that Tulane’s success is our collective success. He addressed questions from the audience while reiterating that collectively we are “One Team, One Vision, One Community”.
