The Standard, the same program administrator for your short- and long-term disability benefits, is in charge of managing Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Parental, Pregnancy, Military, and State Mandated Leaves of Absence. The Standard provides a dedicated team to simplify reporting your absences when you’re out on disability or family leave.
When should I report an absence?
- Your own serious health condition (including pregnancy)
- To care for your newborn child
- The placement of your adopted or foster child
- To provide care for a qualifying family member with a serious health condition
- To care for a covered service member injured in the line of duty
- For qualifying military need, allowing family members to take leave to prepare for or deal with issues that arise as a result of a family member being called to serve in the military
- For leave because of your own military service
For these and other absences, you must follow Tulane’s normal absence reporting procedures, including recording time off in the timekeeping system, if applicable, and notifying your manager of your absence.
How do I notify the Standard?
The Standard uses a secure online portal where you may report a leave of absence or file a short-term disability claim. To use these services, you will need to create an online account, or you may call to make a report.

What happens after I report an absence?
After you start a request for time off and/or file a short-term disability claim, The Standard will send you a letter confirming receipt of your leave request.
- If you’re filing for a short-term disability claim, The Standard will fax an attending physician’s statement to your physician to complete. An authorization to obtain information will be mailed to you to sign and return.
- If you called to request a leave but did not initiate a short-term disability claim, you’ll receive a Certification of Health Care Provider form.
These forms should be returned to The Standard by the due date indicated in your letter.
Case Management
A dedicated nurse case manager will manage your claim for the full duration of your leave and disability claim.
Returning to Work
When you return to work, you must provide a return-to-work authorization to your manager and The Standard.
When I report my absence, what questions will I be asked?
Besides answering other questions about your absence, you will be asked to provide the following information:
- Employer name: Tulane University, aka Administrators of Tulane Education Fund
- Group Policy number: 762085
- Social Security Number
- The last day you were at work
- Reasons you're requesting leave
- Physician's contact information (name, address, phone, and fax number)
