Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Parental, Pregnancy, Military, and State Mandated Leaves of Absence are managed by The Standard, the same program administrator of your Short and Long-Term Disability benefits. The Standard provides a dedicated team to simplify reporting your absences when you’re out on disability or family leave. Our absence professionals work with our disability experts to make the process easier.
When should I report an absence?
- Your own serious health condition (including pregnancy)
- To care for your newborn child
- The placement of your adopted or foster child
- To provide care for a qualifying family member with a serious health condition
- To care for a covered service member injured in the line of duty
- For qualifying military need, allowing family members to take leave to prepare for or deal with issues that arise as a result of a family member being called to serve in the military
- For leave because of your own military service
For other absences, follow Tulane’s normal absence reporting procedures, including recording time off in the timekeeping system (if applicable) and notifying your manager.
Call The Standard at 1-800-428-2938 or visit standard.com/file-claims-and-absences to request a leave of absence or disability.
Timeliness: The leave request must be submitted within 7 business days of the leave start date.
What happens after I report an absence?
After you start a request for time off and/or file a Short-Term Disability claim, The Standard will send you a letter confirming receipt of your leave request.
- If you’re filing for a Short-Term Disability claim: The Standard will fax an Attending Physician’s Statement to your physician to complete. An Authorization to Obtain Information will be mailed to you to sign and return.
- If you requested a leave but did not initiate a Short-Term Disability claim: You’ll receive a Certification of Health Care Provider form.
These forms should be returned to The Standard by the due date indicated in your letter.
A dedicated nurse case manager will manage your claim for the full duration of your leave and disability claim.
When you return to work, provide a return-to-work authorization to your Manager, tubenefits@tulane.edu, and The Standard.
