Guidance for Allowing Time Off to Vote

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020.  Tulane encourages all employees to participate in voting.  Those concerned about the ability to go to the polls on election day should discuss it with their supervisor in advance and consider early voting options.

To that end, here are some key points:

  • Employees needing time off to vote should notify their supervisor, prior to election day, for planning purposes.  Failure to let a supervisor know, in advance, could result in the inability to grant the employee’s request.
  • Time off to vote for hourly employees will be unpaid.  Hourly employees may ask their supervisor to adjust their work schedule to avoid losing pay or make-up the hours.
  • If an employee’s work schedule prevents the employee from going to the polls, the supervisor should provide the employee up to 2 hours of unpaid time off, to vote.
  • Time off to vote should be scheduled in consultation with management at a time that minimizes disruptions to campus or department operations.
  • Employees are not expected to use vacation for time off to vote.
