Frequently Asked Questions (International)

Am I allowed to work while I pursue a degree at Tulane?
International students are allowed to work on campus with approval from OISS. Students are not allowed to work off campus without proper work authorization.

How do I set up direct deposit?
All Tulane employees must receive payment via direct deposit. Open a checking account (Liberty Bank on campus is one option), then set up direct deposit. For help, visit the Financial Spot in LBC Suite 103 or contact OISS at oiss@tulane.edu.

Do I qualify for Federal Work Study?
No. Federal Work Study is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and is only available to U.S. citizens.

Can I apply to jobs if I don't have a Social Security Number?
Yes. International students can apply for on-campus jobs without an SSN as long as they have been approved to work by OISS.

Can I complete new hire paperwork without an SSN?
Yes. You may work and be paid for up to 90 days while waiting for your SSN. See the OISS site for SSN application steps.

What do I do after I get my Social Security Number?
Update your SSN in GLACIER and submit a copy of your SSN card to Payroll through Frevvo. Your I-9 is not complete until your SSN is updated.

How do I gain access to GLACIER?
Contact the International Tax Office at ito@tulane.edu with your name, TUID, and Tulane email to request access.

Do I have to pay U.S. taxes?
Yes. All international students must pay some U.S. taxes, though many are exempt from Social Security and Medicare. Special rules apply to nonresident aliens.

Is there a limit on the number of hours I can work?
F-1 students may not work more than 20 hours per week during academic terms (total across all campus jobs).

Is there a limit on the number of jobs I can have?
International students are allowed to work two non-work-study jobs, as long as total hours do not exceed the allowed maximum.
